What's special about ASA Archery?
ASA Archery sets a specific standard of archery shooting rules which includes set competition rules, professionally executed shooting ranges, standards for dress and conduct, safety standards that include a maximum arrow speed, and a copyrighted 12-ring scoring system. The ASA Federation is focused on the growth of 3-D archery by supporting local clubs and making a commitment to youth education and training. The ASA Federation includes experienced archers and coaches that work year-round conducting well organized and challenging events that are enjoyed by seasoned participants and newcomers alike.
Do I have to join the ASA to shoot?
Anyone wishing to compete in the ASA State Championship or a Pro/Am must join ASA as a full member or family member, preferably a few days before the day of the competition. Memberships will be renewed yearly and are valid for the calendar year.
How do I join the SD ASA Federation?
To join the SD ASA Federation, you will first need to join the ASA. Once you have joined and have an ASA number, you will be considered part of the South Dakota ASA Federation.
How do I know which class to shoot in?
Your equipment and ability determine the class you must shoot in. The ASA Rules lists the Class Definitions, these will help determine the competition class you should shoot in.
Can I shoot a State Championship in a state other than the one I live in?
All ASA Members may qualify to compete in ASA State Championship tournaments in any state unless they are exempt due to age or membership category.
How do I qualify for the State Championship?
In order to compete in a state championship, you must qualify in that state. A shooter who competes in one (1) ASA State Qualifier (of the state they want to shoot the State Championship in), regardless of finish will qualify for that State’s Championship.
All shooters eligible to participate in ASA State Championships will have qualified by shooting in at least one State Qualifier or in a designated Multi-State Qualifier for that state.
Shooters may only compete in a class that they have qualified for, or in a higher class, at the ASA State Championship.
Shooters that qualify and compete in an ASA Federation State Championship, and those that receive State Championship Byes, will be qualified to shoot the ASA Pro/Am Classic.
Do I have to qualify to compete in the State Championship?
Competitors in all classes must be current members of ASA to participate and to be eligible for awards at an ASA State Championship.
Everyone must qualify to shoot unless they are exempted by the list below:
ASA Lifetime Members and / or their family members are automatically qualified to compete in their ASA State Championship and in any bordering state to their own.
State Qualifier Byes and all youth classes ( middle school, elementary school and junior eagle) are exempt from qualifying in their State Championship only.
All youth class competitors will be eligible at other ASA State Championships if they qualified themselves, or may also be eligible if one or more of their parents have qualified in that state and are also participating.
Semi-pro classes (Semi-pro, Known 50, Senior Known 50, Women Known 45 and Crossbow 45) may compete in ASA State Qualifiers and State Championships and qualify for the ASA Classic through the Federation Tour.

The ASA Federation is proud to have over 330 clubs in 37 states. ASA Federation clubs host competitions that feature the standardized set of competition rules; professionally executed shooting ranges; standards for dress and conduct; safety standards that include a maximum arrow speed; and the copyrighted 12-ring scoring system.
